Nive Girl of the Month: Sheila Drakeley

We know that you're thinking - what is a "Nive Girl of the Month"? Each month, we will be interviewing a millennial woman that acts as a catalyst for deviating from the typical nine-to-five lifestyle. This month, our Nive Girl of the Month is Sheila Drakeley, CEO and founder of Sheila Drakeley photography.

Aspiring doctor, professional photographer and traveling masshole. Sheila has certainly proven that you can channel your creativity into personal successes. While crediting her passion for photography to her mother and her hometown, Sheila has effectively transitioned her small town aspiration into a Boston-based business.

Check out how Sheila has turned a pastime into a profession in this months Nive Girl interview.

Nive Girl of the Week, Sheila Drakeley

Tell us a little about your background

“Born and raised in a small farm town in Connecticut but moved to Boston to pursue my education. I actually studied Photography and Neuroscience during my undergraduate years. I work in Medicine and love to travel! I have been to five continents and almost all 50 states!”

What is something that most people don't know about you?

“I am studying to be a Doctor and moved to Boston to pursue my degree and network with some amazing people. I also run a travel blog called "The Traveling Massholes" with my partner and we share budget travel experiences.”

As our Nive Girl of the Month, how do you think you would define your individual style?

“My individual style is what makes me happy! I believe how you look and feel is a key to success but you want to make sure you aren't conforming to others and being yourself.”

Tell us about your morning routine!

“I try to be consistent and get up early. Usually no later than 9 but we are all human. I wake up and always look outside first, orient myself with the day. I check emails, social media, and my to do list that I have either made the night before or for the week. I ALWAYS eat breakfast, as much as possible at home but sometimes it needs to be on the run. I'm a hot chocolate lover but make sure I drink a ton of water to keep me going throughout the day. Depending on what the day entails, I may throw on my favorite cozy outfit, put my hair in a bun and keep a natural face. Only when I have to meet clients, do work outside my home office, or attend an event will I make sure I look the part.”

How have you chosen to deviate from the typical 40-hour workweek? What initially prompted you to start your own business?

“I was fortunate enough to take a hobby I was passionate about and make it my business. I started photography back in college and would attend events to practice and shoot photos for friends. I started small and have continued to build and expand into various markets and areas. I wanted to start my own business to be able to have the flexibility to focus on my personal goals and desires while still being able to put myself and career first.”

Starting your own business can be a tough road. In the difficult moments, how do you stay focused on moving forward and making progress?

“There is always going to be tough times in running a business because it’s a part of life! I am my toughest critic and always try and look back to see how far I've come. I believe it’s important to continue to give yourself credit not for just starting but continuing to push through.”

Who are your biggest influences? Who or what inspired you to do what you’re doing now?

“I find inspiration and influence in so many areas. My family and friends are my biggest support and also my biggest inspiration. Some celebrities or figures I look up to include Lizzo and Kaitlyn Bristowe.”

What is one piece of advice that you'd like to share with our readers?

“Never stop learning. Even if its not 100% applicable to your business, it’s always good to learn. I try to attend lectures, talks, events, listen to podcasts and read about new things - even if it is just for enjoyment. 9 out of 10 times, I have found some way to tie it back to one of my businesses.”
