 Alexandra Hughes Sleep Sheep

Tell us a little about your background (ie. Hometown, College, Job, Interests, etc.)

“I grew up on the Gold Coast in a beach town on the east coast of Australia. I attended Bond University in my home town to earn my law degree. Once I graduated, I took a job at my Mum’s law firm, where I have been working ever since. I am currently in the process of co-founding a start-up business, called SleepSheep, which brings customers plant based and vegan products designed to assist relaxation and sleep. In my downtime you will find me at the beach or enjoying a wine with my closest girlfriends.”

What is something that most people don't know about you?

“Something that most people don’t know about me is that I used to be a competitive athlete. Before I decided to go to university and become a lawyer, I was on the Australian Fencing Team and represented my country at competitions all over the world.”

As our Nive Girl of the Month, how do you think you would define your individual style?

“My individual style is definitely simple and coastal. If I’m not in swimwear, I can’t go past a light linen dress or playsuit which can easily be dressed up with a pair of heels once the sun sets! My work wardrobe is full of sleeveless dresses and fluted-hem skirts that I can wear year-round, just adding a jacket in the cooler months.”

Tell us about your morning routine! (early/late riser, coffee/tea drinker, gym/yoga sessions, makeup, etc.)

“I like to wake up at 5:30am and either go for a swim or a walk at the beach, depending on the weather. I’ve recently given up drinking coffee, so I have an English Breakfast tea and listen to podcasts on entrepreneurship and start-ups while getting ready for work. I religiously moisturize with Bio-oil and hemp based products and also opt for vegan makeup products. Afterwards, I’m on my way to the office by 8am, which is an easy 30 minute drive on one road!”

How have you chosen to deviate from the typical 40-hour work week? What initially prompted you to start your business?

“In my role as a lawyer I’m pretty lucky in the sense that I don’t really work more than 40 hours a week - ever! However, since co-founding SleepSheep, I work way more than 40 hours a week. My co-founder and I are maintaining our ‘day jobs’ at this stage, which means we run our business at night and on the weekends. We are both very ambitious and business-minded and we always wanted to have our own hustle, so we created SleepSheep in response to our own difficulties achieving a good night’s sleep. We wanted to develop a natural and modern-day product that could help others like us.”

Starting your own business can come with its own set of challenges. In the difficult moments, how do you stay focused on moving forward and making progress?

“It sounds cliché, but during the difficult moments I often repeat to myself that ‘nothing worthwhile comes easy’ and ‘If it was easy, everyone would be doing it’. I am highly motivated to begin with, which I think helps a lot to push through the challenging times and stay focused. I am also very lucky to have an amazing business partner and co-founder who will always increase my positivity and momentum when I hit a road-block. “

Who are your biggest influences? Who do you admire most? Who or what inspired you to do what you’re doing now?

“My biggest influence is my Mum. She studied her law degree, started her own law firm and has run it successfully, all while raising a young family. Second to my Mum, would be every woman in this world who has started their own business and every woman who works hard for what they want. To me, nothing is more inspiring than seeing strong women create their own destiny and life path, especially while supporting other women to do the same. Seeing other women reach their own successes is what encouraged me to choose my career as a lawyer, and also start SleepSheep.“

What’s next on the horizon for your business?

“We are very close to launching live sales at SleepSheep, and hope to be able to do so in the next 6-8 weeks. At present, we are in the midst of final product testing, ensuring our website is running smoothly and designing our new products that we hope to add to the range by Christmas, including a ‘mini’ collection for children.”

What is one piece of advice that you'd like to share with our readers?

“My piece of advice is to take risks and follow your heart. If there is a business you want to start, a course you want to study or just something new that you want to do, take small steps to start and give it a go! When people doubt you, thank them for their opinions with grace, and then work even harder to get to where you want to be. You will never know what you can achieve without starting!
