You look at the clock again. It’s the third time in the past five minutes that you couldn’t help but check your phone, only to find that no one has chosen to text you at 2:00 pm on Wednesday afternoon. Your lock screen is as empty as your willingness to continue working through the rest of this afternoon – especially when its sunny and 75 degrees outside. At this point you have two options:
- You fake a doctors appointment and leave for the rest of the afternoon, or
- You “act your age” and power through the rest of the afternoon like the boss you are - with or without the promise of happy hour plans at 5:00 (There needs to be some compromise, right?)
Needless to say, summer afternoons spent in the office can sometimes be torturous. You can only go on so many coffee runs before you find yourself over-caffeinated and unenthused at the thought of yet another afternoon jolt. Luckily for you, we've compiled a list of foolproof ways to fast forward your 2:00 pm crash to a 5:00 pm party.
Spice up your cubicle
That's right. As simple as it sounds, adding a little bit of personalization to your workspace can go a long way. Keep a jar of your favorite snack, prop up some pictures of friends and family, or even tape some words of inspiration to your monitor to serve as a friendly reminder every day you come into the office!
Another easy way to boost your overall mood and even improve the air quality in your workplace is with plants. Studies have shown that keeping a plant in your nearby work environment can increase your productivity by up to 15%! If you're not sitting near a window, we suggest opting for a plant that can survive off of reduced sunlight, like a money tree or alocasia tiny dancers. Once purchasing, re-pot the plant into one of our terrarium trios and voila! You're officially back in business.
Learn Something New
A new language. Background stories of big business moguls. How to properly tie your hair into a ponytail. Nowadays, you can find podcasts on literally everything and anything you can think of. For those of us who have snagged the corner desk that nobody seems to walk by - throw on a documentary or some TED talks while you're working! Sure, it may seem counterintuitive. But if it's keeping you engaged and you're still able to get your work done, it's basically a win-win. If we were really being honest with ourselves, this is exactly what you would've been doing had you chosen to work from home for the day, anyways.
Take a Hike!
Believe it or not, we're not chained to our desks from the hours of nine-to-five. Sure, there are some work environments where employees will show up for work and not get up until it's time for lunch or to go home - but is that really what you want to do? Next time you're feeling that afternoon lull, grab your sunnies and step outside! (If you want to take it a step further, leave your phone in the office) A study done by Lisa Nisbet shows that taking a 15 minute break during the day to walk outside will significantly improve your mood and significantly reduce stress over time - so get moving!
Connect with Others
Whether you want to get to know someone new or connect with an old friend or colleague, taking some time to socialize during the day can go a long way personally and professionally. Sure, the first time you reach out to someone new to grab coffee can be pretty scary, but we promise you will never regret it! More often than not, employees who have made an effort to get to know their co-workers have earned more respect from their colleagues and have experienced more overall success while at work.
